October 10, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Investigators have opened a criminal case against journalist and writer Hanna Z\u0142atko\u016dskaja and exercised a lien over her summer house. The specific charge is unknown. On October 8, law enforcers searched her mother’s apartment. Z\u0142atko\u016dskaja lives abroad, the Belarusian Association of Journalists reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities also opened a case against exiled economist Pavie\u0142 Danejka, administrative director of the BEROC think tank. He is charged with unauthorized business activities, conspiracy to overthrow the government and membership in an extremist group, the Investigative Committee reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An administrator of Nemanskaya 76, 78, 80<\/em>, a Telegram chat with 22 members, was arrested upon her return from Poland. Messages critical of the government were allegedly posted to the chat, a pro-government channel and Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Law enforcers arrested a Minsk company’s shift supervisor for participating in protests in 2020, Viasna reported. They also arrested a man who allegedly posted critical online comments and attended protest rallies, a pro-government channel and Mediazona<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juryj Bara\u016dnio\u016d, a priest of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus parish in Krule\u016d\u0161\u010dyna, Viciebsk region, was sentenced to 10 days in jail, Christian Vision reported. He was found guilty of breaking Article 19.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses prohibiting people from sharing extremist content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On October 4, a Homiel judge tried Vasil \u010carniako\u016d, chancellery head at the local Belarusian Orthodox Church diocese, under Article 19.11. The decision is unknow, Viasna Homiel reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, a court ruling took effect against 20 individuals accused of links with opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja after the Supreme Court rejected an appeal, the Prosecutor General’s Office reported. Earlier, the Minsk Regional Court sentenced the 20 exiled activists to lengthy prison terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nine more people were designated as political prisoners: Dzianis Andro\u0161\u010dyk, Hanna Vasiluk, Raman Parfiona\u016d, Mika\u0142aj Pratasievi\u010d, Arciom Basa\u0142aj, Valeryj Ra\u016dko\u016dski, Anastasija Ilnickaja, Alaksandar Pratasiuk and Alaksiej Martyna\u016d. As of October 10, human rights defenders identified at least 1,287 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities have arrested about 65,000 people for political reasons in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, Viasna reported in early August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
