October 10, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Illegal border crossings from Belarus into the European Union have fallen since the start of October with at least 521 attempts reported in the first week of the month, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2018s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decrease was reported by Poland and Lithuania, which thwarted 383 and 22 attempts, respectively, while Latvia posted an almost 25-percent rise with 116 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal crossings dropped 37 percent in the first week of October compared to the same period in September and 3.7 percent, from August. This year, illegal Belarus-EU crossings peaked in May with some 7,700 attempts and have been falling since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 32,442 illegal border crossings at its shared border with Belarus, with 27,245 attempts via Poland alone, 4,552 via Latvia and 645 via Lithuania. Illegal migration flows via Belarus dropped 6 percent year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
