October 11, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> A Brest judge sentenced Siarhiej Ni\u010dyparuk, Alaksandar Klima\u0161evi\u010d and Ja\u016dhien By\u010dko to prison terms on charges of violent disorder in connection with 2020 protests, the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police also arrested at least five people, including a married couple, in H\u0142ybokaje, Viciebsk region, for their alleged participation in 2020 postelection protests, Mediazona<\/em> reported. One of the arrested is known as Vital \u017dy\u0142a in social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on October 10 included harassment of Belarusians for their online activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

U\u0142adzimir Ha\u016dryka\u016d went on trial in Homiel on criminal charges of insulting and defaming Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka as well as inciting hatred in connection with critical social media posts, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Real estate agency manager Barys A\u016d\u0142uko\u016d was tried for sharing opposition content in Viciebsk two days ago, the Vitebsk, Ya Gulayu <\/em>Telegram channel said. The sentence remains unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lizavieta Kazina, Ina Sarokina, Volha Tarabanava and Juryj Chadok were tried in the Hrodna region on similar charges, according to the Pravo Imeyut <\/em>Telegram channel. Chadok may have been a member of an election commission four years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

High school principal Alaksandar Lejkin in Raha\u010do\u016d, Homiel region, was fired over reactions in social media, Viasna’s Homiel branch said. Yesterday, he was also scheduled to go on trial for sharing opposition content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of October 11, human rights defenders identified at least 1,291 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities have arrested about 65,000 people for political reasons in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, Viasna reported in early August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
