October 11, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Human rights defenders have designated five people as political prisoners, bringing the total to 1,291, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of them is A\u0142a Dziesiacik, serving a three-year prison term on charges of violent disorder, insulting and defaming Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and officials, abusing state symbols and facilitating extremism for alleged association with opposition groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Siarhiej Jun\u010dyc, Alena Lasnie\u016dskaja, Ta\u0107ciana Vasiljeva and U\u0142adzimir Lazarevi\u010d face extremism-related charges over their links to opposition initiatives. Lasnie\u016dskaja is also accused of participating in 2020 postelection protests, and Lazarevi\u010d, of terrorism financing in connection with donations to solidarity groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights activists demanded freedom for these and all other political prisoners and an end to reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement was signed by Viasna, Pravavaja Inicyjatyva, Lawtrend and the Belarusian Association of Journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
