October 11, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Commission has delayed the introduction of its new electronic Entry\/Exit System (EES) for short-term visits of the Schengen zone countries scheduled for November 10, euronews.com<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germany, France and the Netherlands are not yet ready to launch the EES, Ylva Johansson, the European Union commissioner for home affairs, told journalists yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EES was designed to scan passports on arrival, take pictures and check fingerprints. Thousands of exiled Belarusians — who cannot visit their country for fear of persecution and are unable to obtain new passports — hope that the new system, which registers travelers digitally, will eliminate the need for physical entry and exit stamps, which render passports invalid sooner that their actual validity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All EU member states, except Cyprus and Ireland, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland plan to implement it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
