October 11, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> “Nils Mui\u017enieks’ experience and expertise will carry forward the vital work of improving the human rights situation in Belarus,” the Office of \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On October 11, Mui\u017enieks was elected as UN special rapporteur on human rights in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja’s team thanked the Latvian human rights defender for “taking on this challenging yet immensely important task.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mandate of the special rapporteur “contributes significantly to protecting the rights of Belarusians who have suffered from political repression and state terror in Belarus,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja’s office also thanked Ana\u00efs Marin, the current UN special rapporteur on the country, whose “independent, dedicated, and tireless work has brought global awareness to the systemic violations occurring daily in Belarus.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Her efforts in defending Belarusians’ rights have made a significant contribution to the fight for justice in our country,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mui\u017enieks was born on January 31, 1964, in Los Angeles (USA) to a family of Latvian emigrants. He speaks English, Latvian, French and Russian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mui\u017enieks served as the Council of Europe human rights commissioner in 2012\u20132018 and headed Amnesty International’s European branch in 2020\u20132024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Human Rights Council established the mandate of the special rapporteur on Belarus in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since November 2018, the office has been held by France\u2019s Marin. She will leave on November 1, after presenting her final report on human rights in Belarus to the UN General Assembly in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
