October 12, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Today’s Homiel region is a highly developed agricultural area with great potential for tourism, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka said at the Da\u017eynki festival in Karma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have retained access to rich and highly sought-after resources, so we have the opportunity to extract not only peat, but also coal, oil and potash,” \u0141uka\u0161enka said, as quoted by his press office. “We are systematically developing these territories within the framework of the Chernobyl program and are thinking about new horizons.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, there are agreements between Belarus and the Russian state-owned oil company Rosneft to explore the Homiel region’s mineral resources. Geologists will certainly find oil, and the revenues will be used to develop the region, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the National Statistical Committee (Bie\u0142stat), the Homiel region accounted for 11.6 percent of Belarusian GDP in January\u2013August. Only Minsk and the Minsk region had a larger share (31.4 percent and 18 percent, respectively).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 19, at the Re\u010dyca oil field, officials from the Belarusian oil and gas producer Bie\u0142arusnafta and Russia’s Gazprom discussed cooperation in “designing the development of hard-to-recover oil reserves.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 30, \u0141uka\u0161enka and Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin discussed prospects for cooperation by telephone. Authorities did not elaborate on the conversation, which came days after \u0141uka\u0161enka complained about the company to Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to \u0141uka\u0161enka, Putin was particularly outraged by a demand for advance payments for oil, which is mainly supplied to Belarus by Rosneft. “This can’t be! What advance payments? We have worked without prepayment all our lives and can continue to do so,” Putin said, according to the Belarusian ruler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
