October 14, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The border between Ukraine’s Zhytomyr region and Belarus is fully \u201csecured\u201d and there is no threat of invasion, Vitaliy Bunechko in charge of Zhytomyr’s military administration told glavcom.ua<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainian authorities fortified the border with ditches, barbed wire fences and minefields, except for marshy areas, after Russian troops captured nine localities in 2022 arriving from the Chernobyl exclusion zone, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area is heavily patrolled by troops and border guards, the official added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zhytomyr region’s economy deteriorated after the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine supported by the authorities in Minsk, as tourism and cross-border trade declined, Bunechko said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Anything can happen under the guise of peaceful communication, so we are on guard,” he noted. “There are no [people-to-people] contacts because it is just not possible to get close to the border.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though Ukrainians from the border areas are aware of the fortifications, they also fall victim to carelessness, the official said, noting that one man was killed in the forest as family watched him drive over a mine the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bunechko downplayed alleged threats to Ukraine from the Belarusian army’s drills near the shared border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen they [Belarusian authorities] scare us that they have massed a million soldiers, I understand that the one and a half digger that participates in the drill is not a threat to us now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Zhytomyr region’s 280-kilometer (174-mile) border with Belarus\u2019 Homiel region makes up roughly one-third of the 1,084-km (674-mile) Belarusian-Ukrainian border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
