October 15, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>The European Union (EU) has not allowed at least 33,001 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus since the start of 2024, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Border crossings by third-country migrants fell 7.6 percent year on year as Poland thwarted 27,625 attempts; Latvia, 4,676; and Lithuania, 700. This year, Poland reported a 24-percent growth in illegal migration flows via Belarus, while both Baltic states posted a decline of about 60 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first two weeks of October, border violations plunged by 57 percent from last October to 1,080 attempts, with at least 763 targeting Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
