October 15, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Historical literature available at Belarusian bookstores must be in line with the state’s historical policy, said Dr. Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Dani\u0142ovi\u010d, a historian and a member of the government-controlled legislature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Extremist literature should not be sold there,” he told the National Council on Historical Policy under Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, the council will examine dissertations for \u201cextremist\u201d content, state media reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u017amitryj Krutoj, head of the \u0141uka\u0161enka administration who chairs the council, claimed that after the 2020 presidential election, “the fugitive opposition and Western politicians” have tried to rewrite history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The struggle over the historical past is as important as economic and information warfare, or even as military confrontation, he said. Krutoj urged the council to react to provocation and fake news in a timely manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The council is part of the government\u2019s extensive censorship apparatus that has banned fiction and historical works in the last few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, authorities banned an edition of selected works by Belarusian National Republic Prime Minister Vac\u0142a\u016d \u0141asto\u016dski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, authorities blacklisted three books by Ihar Mielnika\u016d, a historian sentenced on September 13 to four years in prison for an interview with Euroradio<\/em>, a Warsaw-based Belarusian media outlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk has also banned several books and articles that promote Belarusian nationalism and history, including works by Vincent Dunin-Marcinkievi\u010d, Viktar Lachar and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
