October 16, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The majority of illegal migrants, who enter Poland via Belarus, are Syrians and nationals of East African states, according to data from Frontex, the European Union border agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first nine months of 2024, about 330 Somalians and a comparable number of Ethiopians, Eritreans and Syrians arrived in Poland via Belarus, rmf24.pl<\/em> reported, citing official data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal border crossings from Belarus into the EU spiked from 700 attempts in 2020 to 82,000 a year later, Frontex said, noting that the surge was Minsk’s deliberate policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that time, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. The crisis escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since January, Illegal Belarus-EU border crossings have exceeded 33,000, falling only 7.6 percent year on year, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data. Poland thwarted 27,625 attempts; Latvia, 4,676; Lithuania, 700.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the adoption of a comprehensive new migration strategy, following the government\u2019s discussion of the migration crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warsaw has not yet made public any details, but a few days ago, Tusk said that the strategy might temporarily suspend the right to asylum in Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tusk\u2019s plan to suspend asylum procedures may be directed against migrants from third countries, not nationals of Belarus and Ukraine, Polish diplomat Mariusz Maszkiewicz commented on the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
