{"id":109687,"date":"2024-10-16T14:42:37","date_gmt":"2024-10-16T11:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/109687\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"freedom-house-belarus-internet-freedom-keeps-deteriorating","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/109687\/","title":{"rendered":"Freedom House: Belarus internet freedom keeps deteriorating"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>October 16, <em>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarus has fallen in the annual Freedom on the Net 2024 ranking, scoring 22 points out of 100 and is classified as not free, found a recent Freedom House survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The government intensified its suppression of online voices, blocking of independent media outlets and information sources, and use of legislation to criminalize online materials produced by what it deemed to be \u2018extremist\u2019 or \u2018terrorist\u2019 groups and individuals,&#8221; the report reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey also noted continued arbitrary arrests of media workers, an increase in the number of criminal cases in connection with donations to online initiatives and phone checks at the Belarusian border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of outlawed independent online news outlets, civil society websites and social media accounts exceeded 4,000 since 2020, the report said citing Human Constanta, a Belarusian NGO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities in Minsk own and control connection to the international internet, Freedom House said, noting that only two state-run entities, the National Center for Traffic Exchange and Bie\u0142telekam, have powers to operate with internet service providers outside Belarus and can cut connections completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also read: <a href=\"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/55423\/\">Belarus world\u2019s third largest prison for journalists \u2013 RSF<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>October 16, Pozirk.
