October 17, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> As mass reprisals continue unabated since the 2020 disputed presidential election, Belarusian judges sentenced at least 170 people (46 women and 124 men) for political reasons in September, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, 61 people were sentenced in Minsk, 44 in the Brest region, 25 in the Minsk region, 20 in the Homiel region, nine in the Viciebsk region, eight in the Mahilo\u016d region and three in the Hrodna region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forty-six percent of those convicted were charged with violent disorder. According to Viasna, authorities continued to use this charge against entire families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trend toward reconviction of citizens previously persecuted for political reasons continued in September, the rights group said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eight of them were charged with malicious disobedience to prison officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of October 17, 1,289 people designated as political prisoners remain behind bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
