October 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The interior ministry has added 21 new names to the list of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities,\u201d taking the total of entries to 4,544, its website says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All blacklisted people were convicted on criminal charges that Belarusian authorities use to persecute political opponents. Fifteen are reportedly serving prison terms. Rights groups declared three of them – Andrej Burdzienia, Vital Sa\u016dka and Juryj \u0141ahadziuk – political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mika\u0142aj \u0141osik, Iryna \u010cabatar, U\u0142adzimir Dzie\u016dhu\u0107, Pavie\u0142 Mi\u015bciejka, \u010cas\u0142a\u016d Hviazdo\u016dski, D\u017amitryj Rutkievi\u010d and Mika\u0142aj Dudarevi\u010d were convicted of disorder charges in connection with participation in 2020 postelection protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrej Suvora\u016d, Anton Lisi\u010dkin, Pavie\u0142 Pa\u0142a\u016d and Alaksandar Lebiedzie\u016d are behind bars for allegedly inciting hatred, insulting officials and Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, while Ja\u016dhien \u015aciapana\u016d was persecuted on charges of association with an extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The criminal records of Viktoryja Kuchar\u010dyk, D\u017amitryj Pilecki, Maksim Nikanovi\u010d, Ina Kalino\u016dskaja, Anastasia Hra\u010dy\u0161kina and \u0141arysa Kulik were not expunged which may mean they are serving non-custodial sentences. They were prosecuted on defamation and protest-related charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in extremist activities are prohibited from engaging in education activity, publishing, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or criminal record annulment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to special monitoring. They are also banned from activities involving narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors, arms and ammunition and explosives, for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Belarus have equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
