October 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Brussels displays \u201cblatant hypocrisy\u201d criticizing Belarus for abusing Europe\u2019s values in connection with the ongoing migration crisis, Anatol H\u0142az, foreign ministry’s spokesman, has commented on the European Union Council\u2019s recent statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official accused the EU of violating all international provisions concerning refugees, which, in his view, proved that \u201cuniversal European values were just an illusion for external use.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

H\u0142az linked the migration crisis to the European leaders’ “irresponsible decisions to sever border cooperation with neighboring countries,\u201d claiming a lack of political will \u201cto fix the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey don’t care about the refugees and migrants whose beaten and mutilated bodies are dumped on our side of the border,\u201d H\u0142az said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU Council\u2019s statement defining the bloc\u2019s general political direction and priorities followed the announcement of a new Polish migration strategy, which provides for the \u201cterritorial\u201d suspension of the right to asylum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move may expose to risks thousands of Belarusians seeking asylum in Poland after fleeing politically-motivated persecution in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk faces severe criticism from advocacy groups and politicians over the controversial strategy, yet has the support of the EU Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExceptional situations require appropriate measures,\u201d it said, reaffirming the \u201cdetermination to ensure effective control of the Union\u2019s external borders through all available means\u201d and pledging to counter attempts to instrumentalize migrants for political purposes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis on the Belarus-EU border has been ongoing since 2021, when Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since January, illegal Belarus-EU border crossings have exceeded 33,000, falling only 7.6 percent year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
