October 20, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The European Union (EU) has not allowed at least 1,412 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus since the start of October, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Border violations plunged by 55 percent from last month, with 909 attempts targeting Poland. Latvia reported 414 illegal crossings, 20-percent more than in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 33,333 illegal border crossings on its shared border with Belarus, 8.3 percent less than last year, with 27,771 attempts via Poland; 4,850 via Latvia and 712 via Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Baltic states posted a decline of about 60 percent in illegal migration flows via Belarus, while Poland reported a 23.5-percent rise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warsaw’s new migration strategy adopted this week may provide for the \u201cterritorial\u201d suspension of the right to asylum and potentially affect Belarusian regime critics who seek to flee politically-motivated reprisals at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
