October 21, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The government should encourage Belarusians to build more village houses, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has told officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His statement reflects concern about Belarus\u2019 excessive urbanization. In a report on Father’s Day, October 21, the National Statistical Committee said 76.9 percent of the country\u2019s adult men live in urban areas. Almost one in five resides in the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We need to slowly reorient and push our Belarusians toward buying plots in localities, unpromising villages or stand-alone farms \u2013 anywhere,” \u0141uka\u0161enka said, as quoted by his press office. “After all, it is almost half a hectare of land. And there are many plots where people have never lived, but where homes can be built. And there are enough rich people, or not rich but wishing to build a village home so that their children can walk barefoot on the grass every year. We need to push them to do so and create appropriate conditions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He instructed officials to include this idea in a new state housing construction program for the next five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August, \u0141uka\u0161enka told officials that he wanted to “give a new impetus” to housing construction in rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
