October 21, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarus’ Ambassador to Austria Andrej Dapkiunas, who represents the country at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and international organizations in Vienna, has been appointed non-resident ambassador to Slovakia, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s press office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus closed down its embassy in Bratislava in the fall of 2023. Its last ambassador to Slovakia, Ihar La\u0161\u010denia, resigned in August 2020 and supported Belarusians who took to the streets to protest alleged electoral fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, Dapkiunas has visited Slovakia several times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A European Union member, Slovakia has imposed sanctions on Belarus but at the same time maintains cultural ties with the country. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has been described by his critics as a pro-Russian populist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dapkiunas, 61, has headed the mission in Vienna since September 2020. Earlier, he served as deputy foreign minister for three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
