{"id":1106,"date":"2023-08-30T19:41:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-30T16:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=1106"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"four-men-sentenced-in-absentia-over-belarus-embassy-incident","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/1106\/","title":{"rendered":"Four men sentenced in absentia over Belarus embassy incident"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>August 30,&nbsp;<em>BPN.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;The Minsk City Court has sentenced four men accused of assaulting Belarusian embassy staff in London to lengthy prison terms, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judge Dzina Ku\u010duk sentenced Vadzim Baha\u016dko\u016d and Maksim Zuje\u016d to 10 years, and Alaksandar Naprejenka and Siarhiej Rabu\u0161ka to eight years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All four were based outside Belarus and tried under special proceedings that target those living abroad and evading contact with investigators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trial was connected with an incident that reportedly occurred in London on December 19, 2021, after a rally in solidarity with Belarus&#8217; political prisoners authorized by the city government. An altercation with embassy staff reportedly occurred after a group of Belarusians put a toilet scrubber and cleaner on display in front of the embassy&#8217;s gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The defendants set up an &#8220;insulting&#8221; object outside the embassy and threw eggs at the facade, the prosecutor said. They allegedly battered Belarusian diplomats who arrived at the scene. One diplomat was diagnosed with mild concussion, nasal fracture and chipped tooth, according to reports from the Belarusian foreign ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ministry summoned the UK&#8217;s charge d&#8217;affaires to protest against the incident and demand that it be thoroughly investigated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prosecutors forwarded the case to court on July 26.
