October 22, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Journalist Ihar Ilja\u0161, the husband of imprisoned journalist Kaciaryna Andrejeva (Bachva\u0142ava), was arrested for interviews with independent media, according to a police video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He may be accused with facilitating extremism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police released a video of Ilja\u0161 being detained by four elite police officers in full gear. At least two other people filmed the arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the video, Ilja\u0161 says that he was a Belsat<\/em> TV staff member until July 2021, after which he became a freelance journalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also recalls being approached by a Ukrainian journalist “investigating the possible participation of Belarusian troops in the invasion of Ukraine.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ilja\u0161 mostly talked to the media to express concern about his wife’s health and poor conditions in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July 2022, the Homiel Regional Court sentenced Andrejeva to eight years in prison for alleged high treason. Human rights activists called the charge politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
