October 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarus ranked 105th of 142 counties in the 2024 Rule of Law Index, compiled by the World Justice Project, an NGO based in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country fell one position from the last year, scoring 0.45 points on a scale of 0 to 1, where 1 signifies the strongest adherence to the rule of law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus’ ranking was affected by 0.26 points in constraints on government powers factor, 0.31 points in openness of the government and 0.39 points in criminal justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the neighboring countries, only Russia ranked lower in the 113th position. Lithuania reached the 18th ranking, followed by Latvia and Poland, occupying 21st and 33rd places, respectively. Ukraine was 88th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Denmark tops the ranking with 0.9 points, followed by Norway and Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politically-motivated reprisals have continued in Belarus unabated since 2020 presidential election with at least 1,300 political prisoners as of October 23. Their real number may be considerably higher because many cases go undocumented, rights groups note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
