October 23, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>TheBelarusians “became a nation” when they took to the streets in 2020 to protest election fraud, \u015aviat\u0142ana Aleksijevi\u010d, Nobel Prize laureate in literature, has told DW<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe peaceful protest stood no chance of winning because [Russian President Vladimir] Putin was on stand-by,\u201d she noted. \u201cWe see what Putin is capable of. Belarus would lie in ruins, just as Ukraine now lies in ruins. We did everything right. We proved to ourselves and the world that it is the 21st<\/sup> century, that we must do things in a different way, without bloodshed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Non-violent protests gained Belarusians a new reputation globally, the writer said, urging exiled Belarusians to invest in their education and expand their worldview to be ready for a new Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked what if the time will never come, she said \u201cIt will come. It is impossible to beat time. Maximum 10 years, but I think even sooner. Much will depend on Europe and the processes taking place in Russia. But for the time being I do not see forces of resistance in Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aleksijevi\u010d is the first Nobel Prize winner in the history of independent Belarus. Four years ago, she joined the Coordination Council set up to settle the political crisis but was forced to leave the country fearing politically-motivated persecution. She is currently based in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
