October 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Minsk has set the presidential election for January 26 because Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka hopes for a ceasefire in Ukraine, opposition politician Anatol Labied\u017aka, said on Telegram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian President Vladimir Putin has convinced Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka that the West will force Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate a peace deal in spring, Labied\u017aka said. For the Belarusian ruler, this is a chance to regain agency and legitimacy, he said. However, in order to do so he needs to create an impression that the majority has agreed to turn the page, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The election has been scheduled early so that he can catch up a possible key event on the European calendar \u2013 take part in Europe’s post-war rearrangement, the politician said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that \u0141uka\u0161enka wants the election to pass off without shocks and disturbances, so he might put repression on hold and free some political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
