October 24, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on October 23, as father and son Sergei and Pavel Kabarchuk, both Ukrainian nationals, were given 20 years in prison in Homiel, the state-run media reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both were arrested earlier this year together with Vital U\u0142asiuk from Brest whose sentence was not disclosed. Belarusian authorities accused them of collaborating with the Ukrainian security services and plotting terrorist attacks in Russia and Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other criminal proceedings reported yesterday included the trial of Maksim Sandraku\u0142a in Hrodna for participating in 2020 postelection protests. Authorities accuse him of rioting, the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrej Savicki went on trial in Minsk over his post on Odnoklassniki that allegedly contained denial of genocide against the Belarusian people during WW2 and insults of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrested and released<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk police arrested a woman for riding on a motorcycle with white and red ribbons on her helmet during 2020 protests, a pro-government source said. In a police video, she admitted to taking pictures with the opposition leaders four years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141apa\u010denka was arrested in the Mahilo\u016d region for sharing opposition content on Odnoklassniki, Mediazona <\/em>said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ta\u0107ciana Karatkievi\u010d, who ran against \u0141uka\u0161enka in the 2015 election, was released from jail after serving 15 days for a banned photo, politician Andrej D\u017amitryje\u016d said on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three actors of the Minsk-based Belarusian National Drama Theater arrested last week were jailed on petty hooliganism charges, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported. Authorities did not disclose their names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vieranika Zakre\u016dskaja, Kry\u015bcina Ka\u0161lej, Darja Ramaniec, Leanid Ma\u016d\u010dun and Alesia Han\u010dar were tried in the Hrodna region for sharing opposition content, the Pravo Imeyut<\/em> Telegram channel said. The sentences remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of October 24, human rights defenders identified at least 1,300 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities filed 7,400 politically-motivated criminal cases in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, Viasna reported last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
