October 24, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The budget for the first round of the 2025 presidential election has surpassed the same budget for 2020 by more than $1 million, the central election commission said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the commission approved the cost estimate for two rounds of voting: 52.89 million rubels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of this amount, 37.4 million rubels (some $11.36 million) is allocated for the first round. The one-round 2020 election cost $10.23 million. So the difference is about $1.13 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A commission official called the difference insignificant and explained it by “a rise in consumer prices and wages since 2020.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, the Belarusian House of Representatives scheduled the presidential election for January 26, while Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka announced that he will run for the seventh term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian pro-democracy forces have called on supporters to protest the election “by voting against all those who steal our right to vote.” By voting \u201cagainst all\u201d the Belarusian public will demonstrate that it continues to oppose \u0141uka\u0161enka and demands free and fair elections, they said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country has not held a single free and fair election since 1996, by standards of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
