October 27, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> has learned that about two weeks ago, Belarusian authorities arrested artists Ludmi\u0142a \u0160\u010damialova and Ihar Ryma\u0161e\u016dski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artists are engaged in the practice of painting, applied art and monumental art. Their works can be found in the Belarusian National Art Museum and in galleries abroad. \u0160\u010damialova is the daughter of People’s Artist Leanid \u0160\u010damialo\u016d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not known what the married couple is accused of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Euroradio<\/em> pointed out that at the end of 2020, they organized an exhibition “rethinking the events of the time.” “There were lots of white-red-white symbols” on paintings, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many cultural figures have been persecuted after the 2020 unrest. Many quit their jobs to protest alleged electoral fraud and were forced to flee the country. One of the examples is the Janka Kupa\u0142a Theatre, whose artists supported the protesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, Belarusian PEN documented 1,097 violations against 605 cultural figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two weeks ago, Culture Minister Anatol Markievi\u010d reported the “eradication of destructive elements” in the industry. The country’s cultural community has “focused its efforts on solving the main task: educating worthy citizens and patriots,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
