October 29, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> October is setting the 2024 record for the number of illegal migrants trying to cross into Lithuania from Belarus, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officers stopped 201 entries between October 1 and 28, more than in September. The previous record of 332 attempts was documented in November 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of the year, the Lithuanians have foiled 824 attempts by migrants from Asia and Africa to cross illegally into the European Union from Belarus. The migratory pressure has gradually increased throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania accounted for 2.4 percent of all attempts to cross into the EU from Belarus. Latvia and Poland have thwarted 4,994 and 28,174 attempts, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
