August 30, BPN<\/em>.<\/strong> Juryj Hara\u016dski, a former member of the Belarusian interior ministry’s Special Rapid Response Unit, will go on trial in St. Gallen, Switzerland, on September 19, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“With this first ever prosecution of an alleged member of \u0141uka\u0161enka’s hit squad we are sending a strong signal,” said Pavie\u0142 Sapie\u0142ka of the Viasna Human Rights Center. “Justice for international crimes can and will be delivered, regardless of state borders or time elapsed since the crimes have been committed.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judicial systems start using the principle of universal jurisdiction to prevent impunity for international criminals, he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case marks a “decisive step forward in the fight against impunity for the crimes committed in Belarus,” said Severin Walz, the attorney at law representing the victims\u2019 families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2019, media reported that Hara\u016dski admitted to being a member of a death squad that allegedly abducted and killed former Interior Minister Juryj Zacharanka, businessman Anatol Kraso\u016dski and opposition politician Viktar Han\u010dar in 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hara\u016dski has been living in Switzerland since October 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zacharanka, Kraso\u016dski and Han\u010dar disappeared between May and December 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The families of the victims made numerous attempts to obtain information on the whereabouts of their relatives. However, law enforcement authorities in Belarus systematically refused to prosecute perpetrators and to hold them accountable.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
