October 31,<\/strong> Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>New cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on October 30 include more extremist content designations for government-critical content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information ministry blacklisted the Hrodna-based news outlet s13.ru<\/em> and its Telegram channel, TikTok pages by exiled stand-up comedian S\u0142ava Kamisaranka and blogger Alaksandar Ivulin; Blahodijnyj Fond Vilna Biloru<\/em>\u015b<\/em> and Borisov<\/em> on Instagram; palatnomedia<\/em>, mini_pravda<\/em>, nevybory<\/em>, freedomby2020 <\/em>on TikTok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pressure on media workers is increasing in the run-up to the January presidential election: journalist Ihar Ilja\u0161 was transferred to a pretrial detention center, the Belarusian Association of Journalists reported. Ilja\u0161, the husband of imprisoned journalist Kaciaryna Andrejeva, was arrested on October 21 over interviews for media labeled by the government extremist. He is likely to face criminal charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u017amitryj Ku\u010duk, former chairman of the outlawed Belarusian Greens Party, will go on trial in Minsk on November 22, the Supreme Court\u2019s website said. Authorities accuse him of violent disorder and calling for sanctions, charges routinely used to persecute regime critics in Belarus. If convicted, he may face up to 12 years in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Supreme Court rejected appeals by Anatol Kota\u016d, Vadzim D\u017amitronak, Ja\u016dhien Vilski, Volha Kara\u010d and Vieranika Capka\u0142a, the Prosecutor General\u2019s Office reported. The guilty verdict issued by the Brest Regional Court in July without the defendants being present has entered force. The exiled activists were sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges of forming an extremist group and plotting to overthrow the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three actors from the Belarusian National Drama Theater in Minsk were released after serving a jail term on petty hooliganism charges, reform.news<\/em> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of October 31, human rights defenders identified at least 1,292 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities filed 7,400 politically-motivated criminal cases in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, according to Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
