October 31, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Latvia has not allowed at least 5,004 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus since January, accounting for 14.5 percent of the total number of documented illegal border crossings from Belarus into the European Union, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This month, illegal crossings into Latvia surged 65 percent from September and 17 percent from August, yet fell significantly from the last October\u2019s level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January-October, Poland remained the top destination for third-country foreigners with at least 28,194 attempts (almost 84 percent), while Lithuania was the least popular with 830 attempts (2.4 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarus-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
