October 31, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>A total of 1,051 cars are waiting to cross into the European Union at the Brest-Terespol border checkpoint, the only crossing handling passenger traffic between Belarus and Poland, the State Border Committee reports, citing data as of 10 am this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The queue has shrunk in the past two days after a record high of 1,300 cars on October 29, it noted. The number of vehicles processed by Polish border guards yesterday accounted for 39 percent of what they normally process, the committee said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus-registered passenger cars are banned from entering the Baltic states, which justified the move by the June EU sanctions package. This left only the Brest-Terespol crossing for Belarusians wishing to enter the EU by car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bus queue at the Belarusian-Polish border fell from 88 vehicles three days ago to only six. The record number of buses, 108, was reported in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 700 trucks are also waiting to cross from Belarus into the EU. The Beniakoni-\u0160al\u010dininkai checkpoint between Belarus and Lithuania processed 28 percent of the usual cargo traffic, while the Hryharo\u016d\u0161\u010dyna -Paternieki at the Belarusian-Latvian border handled 50 percent of the EU-bound trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, Lithuania closed its \u0160umskas and Tvere\u010dius checkpoints, and in March, Lavori\u0161k\u0117s and Raigardas, leaving only Medininkai and \u0160al\u010dininkai to handle the cross-border traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vilnius cited national security, smuggling and international sanctions as the reasons. Latvia also closed the Silene border crossing at its shared border with Belarus indefinitely, citing concerns about illegal migration which has been on the rise this year. The move left Paternieki as the only operating checkpoint between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2023, shortly after Belarus had sentenced Polish minority activist Andrzej Poczobut to eight years in prison in a criminal case widely seen as politically motivated, Poland closed the Bobrowniki border crossing indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only two checkpoints remain open at the Belarusian-Polish border: Brest for passenger traffic and Kaz\u0142ovi\u010dy for cargoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
