November 2, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> At least 60 percent of people nominated to the territorial election commissions in the upcoming January presidential vote are known as Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s supporters, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of the official data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the 1,725 nominees to 153 territorial commissions, 274 represent pro-government parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public organizations and government-controlled trade unions nominated 1,009 people, most of whom are loyal to the current authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The central election commission (CEC) also reported 443 self-nominees, as well as 103 people appointed by workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Territorial commissions will be set up by November 6, a day before the launch of the ballot-access signature collection. Candidates must garner at least 100,000 voter signatures to qualify for the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, the CEC has registered groups that will collect signatures for Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his supporters Volha \u010camadanava, Aleh Hajdukievi\u010d and Alaksandar Chi\u017eniak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In two days, the CEC will decide on the remaining applications, including by retired general Siarhiej Bobryka\u016d, pro-government communist leader Siarhiej Syranko\u016d and 2020 presidential hopeful Hanna Kanapackaja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus will hold its seventh presidential election from January 21 to 26, with the whole election cycle limited to just three months. The current campaign is taking place in a purged political landscape amid a new wave of crackdown on regime critics.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country has not held a single free and fair election since 1996 by the standards of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The previous 2020 presidential race was marred by fraud and police brutality against peaceful protesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
