November 3, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/strong>.<\/em> Authorities released art manager U\u0142adzimir Bu\u0142a\u016dski from a penal colony after he had served his term, the Vitebsk, Ya Gulayu <\/em>Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was arrested in December 2022 and given two years in prison on charges of violating the order of holding mass events a few months later. Rights groups considered his persecution to be politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bu\u0142a\u016dski did not admit his guilt and testified in court in Belarusian. Last year, authorities blacklisted him as an extremist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of November 3, human rights defenders identified at least 1,299 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian PEN recorded 1,097 violations of artists’ rights in 2023. A few weeks ago, authorities boasted purging the arts and culture of \u201cdestructive elements,\u201d as dissident artists are often described.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
