November 4, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has told Committee for State Security (KGB) chief Ivan Tertel to make sure the foreign ministry is free of bad eggs and \u201ctraitors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At today\u2019s government conference, Foreign Minister Maksim Ry\u017eanko\u016d reported on a plan to reshuffle overseas diplomatic missions, citing heavy information and ideological pressure on diplomats. The candidacies were vetted from a patriotic standpoint as well, he noted. It is extremely important for diplomats to look at bilateral relations through the eyes of “our side” and not theirs, he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the 2020 disputed presidential election, many diplomats resigned and quite a few supported protesters. Some of them, such as former Ambassador to Argentina U\u0142adzimir Astapienka and former Ambassador to Slovakia Ihar La\u0161\u010denia, have joined the opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many diplomatic missions counted the votes cast by Belarusians abroad fairly, documenting \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s victory at their polling stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That prompted the government to close down all polling stations abroad to deny foreign-based Belarusians the opportunity to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2020, the opposition white-red flag was displayed together with the official red-green flag in front of the Belarusian Embassy in Sweden for some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u017amitryj Miron\u010dyk, who led the mission at the time, currently heads the ministry’s Main Directorate for Asia, Africa and Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
