November 5, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Human rights defenders have designated 14 people as political prisoners, bringing the total to 1,312, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It named Anatol \u010curyka\u016d, Illa \u0141uka\u0161enka, Piotra Kavalo\u016d, Valer Maroz, Siarhiej Piatru\u010dyk, Andrej Kar\u010daha, \u0179micier Bu\u0142ana\u016d, Ja\u016dhien By\u010dko, Alaksandar Klima\u0161evi\u010d, Siarhiej Ni\u010dyparuk, Alaksandar Martysievi\u010d, Anastasija Fo\u015bcij, \u0179micier \u0160\u010derba and Alaksandar \u0160ukaj\u0142a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All 14 were persecuted for taking part in protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Biaroza District Court in the Brest region sentenced \u010curyka\u016d and \u0141uka\u0161enka to unknown prison terms. The sentences of Martysievi\u010d and \u0160\u010derba are also unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minsk Leninski District Court sentenced Kavalo\u016d to two years behind bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Va\u016dkavysk District Court in the Hrodna region sentenced \u0160ukaj\u0142a to restricted freedom in an open-type corrective institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no public information about Fo\u015bcij.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October 2024, Kar\u010daha, Piatru\u010dyk, Bu\u0142ana\u016d, Maroz and Ni\u010dyparuk were sentenced to 1.5 years in prison each for participating in the August 10, 2020, protest rally in Brest. By\u010dko and Klima\u0161evi\u010d, to a year each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights defenders know of at least 77 people convicted of rioting for protest rallies in Brest. After a brief lull at the end of 2023, new arrests began in connection with the protests, but under a different charge: violent disorder. At least 67 people have since been convicted of this crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights activists noted that the right to peaceful assembly was guaranteed by Article 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. “No restrictions may be placed on the exercise of this right other than those imposed in conformity with the law and which are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security or public safety, public order (ordre public), the protection of public health or morals or the protection of the rights and freedoms of others,” the article says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activists demanded freedom for these and all other political prisoners and an end to reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement was signed by Viasna, the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, Pravavaja Inicyjatyva, the Belarusian Association of Journalists, Lawtrend, Human Constanta, and Belarusian PEN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
