November 13, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on November 12 as Latvian national Juris Gani\u0146\u0161 went on trial in Minsk. Charges against him include discrediting the Belarusian state and calling for sanctions, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. Authorities closed the hearing to the public and did not disclose any further details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other criminal proceedings include the trial of jailed Siarhiej Kanava\u0142a\u016d, Viasna said. He is accused of disobeying prison administration, a charge typical when the authorities want to pressure their opponents and keep them behind bars longer. Kanava\u0142a\u016d is serving a 15-year prison term for an alleged attempt to disrupt the movement of Russian troops and equipment on the railway after the Russian assault in February 2022. Rights groups consider him a political prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar Akakije\u016d was given 18 months in prison for insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, the Homiel branch of Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Online content<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Siarhiej Kavun, Volha Ramanva, Alena Matuk, Alaksandar Damaracki and Aleh Rudnicki were tried in the Hrodna region for sharing opposition content, the Pravo Imeyut<\/em> Telegram channel said. The sentences remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanis\u0142a\u016d Pilecki, an honorable citizen of Miory, Viciebsk region, was tried in late October on similar charges and now is accused of another minor offense which may be linked to the possession or display of Belarusian national symbols, the Vitebsk, Ya Gulayu <\/em>Telegram channel reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Information ministry reported extremist content designations for Radyjo Harodnia<\/em> and BIEA\u0141ARU\u015a PIERAD USIMI! <\/em>on Telegram as well as chinovniktiktok<\/em> on TikTok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minsk City Court heard the justice ministry’s liquidation suits against seven associations, including the groups of auditors, golf players, people with disabilities and American Akita dog owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of November 13, human rights defenders identified at least 1,279 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities filed 7,400 politically-motivated criminal cases in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, Viasna reported in early October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
