November 14, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>New cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on November 13 include several criminal charges against exiled former riot policeman Pavie\u0142 Ku\u0142a\u017eanka and former military officer Vital Paciechin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Investigative Committee accused both of terrorism and plotting to seize power over the 2021 drone attack on a Minsk-based special police unit. Authorities seized their Belarus-based properties valued at 240,000 rubels (about $71,600). Ku\u0142a\u017eanka is a member of the Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Regiment fighting Russia in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other developments, Hienad\u017a Sa\u016drycki, his wife Iryna and daughter Vijaleta went on trial in Minsk on criminal charges of inciting hatred in connection with politically-sensitive social media posts, the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More people were tried for sharing opposition content, including Viciebsk TikToker Maryna Prudnikava and Juryj \u017duk from Or\u0161a, the Vitebsk, Ya Gulayu<\/em> Telegram channel said. \u017duk faced similar charges on two previous occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u017amitryj Pta\u0161ac in Po\u0142ack and \u015aviat\u0142ana Pasmurec in Lepiel were tried for allegedly violating the order of holding mass events, the same channel reported. The sentences in all cases remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lepiel district’s honorable citizen Juryj \u0141abana\u016d was tried for a minor offense which may be linked to his support of opposition groups or independent media blacklisted in Belarus, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry reported extremist group designation for the Belarusian People’s Tribunal initiative, identifying Mikita Leaniuk, Volha Katovi\u010d, Arciom Prypisno\u016d and former law enforcer Ihar Makar as members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 17 trade unionists are held behind bars in Belarus, according to Viasna. Rights defenders also said they had information about some 20 people convicted since 2020 on charges of obstructing elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of November 14, human rights defenders identified at least 1,275 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities filed 7,400 politically-motivated criminal cases in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, Viasna reported in mid-October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
