November 16, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Twelve Ukrainians have been detained in Belarus on charges of extremism, Ukrainian Ambassador-at-Large Ihor Kyzym told Mediazona<\/em> at the Ostro\u017akykh Forum in Kyiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ukrainian consul has met with some of the detainees, though the exact timing of their detention remains unclear, Kyzim said. He noted that Minsk usually does not inform Kyiv about the detention of Ukrainian nationals. “They can be included in our embassy’s lists only if they want to, or if their relatives inform us. Sometimes we receive information from human rights organizations,” the envoy explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyzim added that Ukrainians who have lived in Belarus for a long time and have families there often avoid seeking help from Ukrainian authorities if arrested, fearing for their relatives’ safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 28, Minsk handed over to Kyiv Ukrainians Mykola Shve\u0107, Nataliia Zakharenko, Pavlo Kupriienko, Liudmyla Honcharenko and Kateryna Briukhanova, arrested on charges of illegal handling of firearms, espionage and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
