November 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarus is ready to resume air traffic with European countries as soon as political obstacles are removed, said state media quoted Ihar Ho\u0142ub, the transportation ministry’s aviation department head, as saying at a presentation of Minsk-Urumqi passenger service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian national airline Bie\u0142avija has been banned from the European Union after Belarusian security officers cited a false bomb threat in May 2021 to divert the passenger aircraft to Minsk and arrest prominent journalist Raman Pratasievi\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident has not been properly investigated because Belarusian officials denied international experts access to key evidence and witnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The International Civil Aviation Organization Council determined that the bomb threat against Ryanair Flight 4978 \u201cwas deliberately false and endangered its safety, and furthermore that the threat was communicated to the flight crew upon the instructions of senior government officials of Belarus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs neither a bomb nor evidence of its existence was found during pre-departure screening in Athens Greece and after various searches of the aircraft in Belarus and Lithuania, it is considered that the bomb threat was deliberately false. Knowingly communicating false information which endangers the safety of an aircraft in flight is an offence under Article 1 (1) (e) of the Montr\u00e9al Convention,\u201d it said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Ho\u0142ub believes that European countries are interested in resuming air traffic with Belarus. “Flying around Belarus and the Russian Federation is a very big expense for the airlines\u2019 economy,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our skies are open. We have never put obstacles in anyone’s way and are always ready to resume both dialogue and air traffic with European countries,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bie\u0142avija plans to launch passenger service between Minsk and China\u2019s Urumqi on December 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
