November 20, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on November 19 included trials in criminal cases against Ihar and Kaciaryna Hramovi\u010d as well as against Hanna, Ina and Raman Usmana\u016d in Minsk, the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two other families are scheduled to go on trial this week. Authorities accuse all of violent disorder for participating in 2020 postelection protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna’s recent report also highlighted hundreds of convictions in Belarus for displaying solidarity with the Ukrainian people since the start of Russia’s full-scale war on Ukraine in February 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentences range from one to 25 years in prison, while some defendants were ordered to undergo compulsory psychiatric treatment. Rights defenders also documented 1,671 arrests over anti-war positions. The arrested reportedly faced torture and inhuman treatment behind bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volha \u017dytkaja went on trial in U\u0161a\u010dy, Viciebsk region on, charges of violating the order of holding mass events which may be connected to her online activities, Viasna’s Viciebsk branch said. The woman teaches biology in one of the local schools where allegedly \u201ca subversive network\u201d was operating as the state-run propaganda claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though law enforcers have recently stopped posting videos with the arrested people, the court schedules confirm that persecution in politically-motivated cases continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of November 20, human rights defenders identified at least 1,269 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities filed 7,400 politically-motivated criminal cases in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, according to Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
