November 20, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Human rights defenders have designated 13 people as political prisoners, bringing the total to 1,275, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The status was granted to Stanis\u0142a\u016d Taspaje\u016d, U\u0142adzimir Para\u0161ko\u016d, Hienad\u017a Horba\u010d, Ina Palcava, Siarhiej Kryvu\u0107, Andrej Astapienka, Andrej Savicki, Artur Kanapacki, Artur Ma\u0142\u010dan, Alaksandar Akakije\u016d, Ja\u016dhien Katlaro\u016d, D\u017amitryj Su\u016dchana\u016d and D\u017amitryj Alchovik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Horba\u010d, Kryvu\u0107, Savicki, Akakije\u016d, Palcava and Alchovik were sentenced for allegedly insulting the head of state. Kanapacki, Ma\u0142\u010dan, Para\u0161ko\u016d and Su\u016dchana\u016d, for allegedly desecrating state symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Katlaro\u016d, sentenced to 1.5 years in prison despite being a pro-government blogger and provocateur, was also designated as a political prisoner. The judge found him guilty of discrediting Belarus and insulting a state servant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights defenders called for the decriminalization of defamation and the inadmissibility of imprisonment for insulting the state and its institutions, officials and symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activists regarded the persecution and imprisonment of the aforementioned people as politically motivated and connected with their exercising of freedom of expression, and called on the authorities to free them and all other political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement has been signed by the Viasna Human Rights Center, the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, the Belarusian Association of Journalists, Pravavaja Inicyjatyva, and Lawtrend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
