November 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on November 21 include a guilty verdict for exiled activist Je\u017ey Hryhien\u010da on extremism-related charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hrodna Regional Court sentenced him to six years in prison and fined him 40,000 rubels ($12,200) without the defendant being present at the trial, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. Hryhien\u010da coordinated the 2020 presidential campaign of Hanna Kanapackaja, who intends to run for president in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna also reported that at least 112 people were convicted in politically-motivated cases in Belarus without being present at the trials, noting that three persons had been convicted twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piotr Klimko was tried in Dok\u0161ycy, Viciebsk region, for sharing opposition content, the Vitebsk, Ya Gulayu <\/em>Telegram channel said. The sentence remains unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June, Dzianis Pyrch was released after serving two and a half years in prison on charges of insulting an official and discrediting the state for online comments on the 2021 shootout involving an IT engineer and KGB officers, known as the \u201cZielcer case,\u201d Viasna’s Homiel branch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five months ago, Alaksandar Nikicin was given a prison term on violent disorder charges used to persecute regime critics in Belarus, Viasna reported. Rights groups declared him a political prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 178 political prisoners have been released in six batches over the past four and a half months with the most recent group pardoned yesterday, yet 223 people were designated as political prisoners in the same period, Viasna said in a report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of November 22, human rights defenders identified at least 1,273 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities filed 7,400 politically-motivated criminal cases in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, Viasna reported in mid-October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
