November 22, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarus can use information and psychological operations to resist the ongoing information war, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has told professors and students at Minsk State Linguistic University, known for being one of the centers of unrest during the 2020 postelection protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is not something that we invented,\u201d the Belarusian ruler’s press office quoted him as saying. “We will be forced to react but based on the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalists play a \u201cspecial role\u201d when \u201cthere is a danger of unleashing a real, hot war,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe role of the media is great today. You are at the forefront,\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka stressed, noting that only the state-run media can be trusted. Only those who \u201cknow how to analyze and make appropriate conclusions can see alternative points of view,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is nothing wrong with propaganda, as all journalists and politicians engage in it, \u0141uka\u0161enka noted. “We promote our way of life, our culture and other things through propaganda. . . We’re campaigning for it. And whom do you support? Those who give money,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the 2020 crackdown, most independent Belarusian media outlets relocated abroad or shut down, while those remaining in Belarus avoid covering politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of outlawed independent online news outlets, websites and social media accounts exceeded 4,000 since 2020, according to a recent Freedom House survey released in mid-October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
