November 22, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>At least 42 servicemen have been prosecuted in Belarus since 2020, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports. Twenty-six of them have been deprived of liberty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty servicemen were in detention as of November 22. According to the human rights group, 18 of them were sentenced to prison and two more were in custody pending sentencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights groups have recognized at least nine servicemen as political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of them were sentenced for online comments, donations, sharing classified information or supporting the Ukrainian military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There is also information that some servicemen were beaten and tortured in detention. In addition, they are subjected to various forms of pressure in prison,” the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The longest sentences among the military were given to the “Hajdukievi\u010d case” defendants, including U\u0142adzis\u0142a\u016d Vajciachovi\u010d, a Military Academy graduate, and military pensioner Siarhiej Saka\u0142o\u016d. According to investigators, they and others tried to set fire to the house of deputy Aleh Hajdukievi\u010d in June 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vajciachovi\u010d was convicted of terrorism and sentenced to 21 years in a penal colony. Saka\u0142o\u016d was tried for conspiracy to overthrow the government and other supposed crimes and got 14 years in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soldiers were also tried for sabotage, terrorism and treason. Some of the trials were held behind closed doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
