November 23, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja held talks with US Senators James Risch and Jeanne Shaheen, representing Republican and Democratic parties, respectively, her aide Franak Via\u010dorka has told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 2024 Halifax International Security Forum in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja called for an international campaign for the release of Vasil Vieramiej\u010dyk, a former Belarusian volunteer, who had fought alongside Ukrainian forces and was captured in Vietnam and extradited to Belarus last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cooperation with the authorities in Minsk, especially in the field of law enforcement, should be ceased, while Belarus should be deprived of the right to use Interpol to punish political opponents, she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician also discussed the upcoming second session of the strategic dialogue with the United States, scheduled for early December in Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja urged Washington to appoint a new US special envoy for Belarus, adopt the new Belarus Democracy Act and protect Belarus’ independence amid the threat of a potential Russian takeover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
