November 25, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>The European Union (EU) has not allowed at least 73 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus over the past day after thwarting 41 attempts on Saturday, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania did not register illegal crossings on the weekend, yet Poland thwarted 79 attempts and Latvia, 35.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU stopped at least 35,223 illegal border crossings at its shared border with Belarus, about 14 percent less than in the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 24 days of November, the EU thwarted at least 1,091 attempts by third-country foreigners to cross illegally via Belarus. Illegal migration fell 39 percent from the October level and 55.5 percent year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Baltic states posted an annual decline in illegal migration ranging from 60 to 70 percent, while Poland reported a 46-percent drop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal migration was at its yearly lows in January and February with 96 and 458 attempts, respectively. November may rank third if the current trend maintains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
