November 25, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Belarusian courts tried 106 people in 87 politically-motivated criminal cases last week, including six on high treason charges, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the disputed 2020 presidential election, authorities convicted at least 88 people, including 13 women, of high treason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, 35 people were accused of violent disorder over their participation in 2020 postelection protests, while 41 were convicted of defamation. At least 11 trials were closed to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politically-motivated reprisals have continued unabated in Belarus since the 2020 political crisis. Authorities keep punishing their opponents by placing them behind bars for participation in protests, public expression of disagreement with current policies and other political activities, rights defenders said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reprisals intensified in the run-up to the seventh presidential election on January 21-26, with mass raids and arrests reported across Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real scale of reprisals may be considerably higher because many cases go undocumented, Viasna noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
