November 27, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Members of the BelPol association of former law enforcers discussed strengthening sanctions against Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials during a visit to Brussels, the group said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They attended a conference on economic sanctions targeting Russia and its allies on November 20 and 21 organized by the Center for Finance and Security, the Royal United Services Institute, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Stockholm Centre for Eastern European Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanctions should aim to weaken the military economy of Belarus, speeding up the end of Russia’s war on Ukraine, BelPol said, citing conference participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New restrictions would help reduce resources allocated to arms production, even though Russia may partially compensate \u0141uka\u0161enka’s economic losses given Belarus\u2019 economic dependence on the Kremlin, the group noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 22, BelPol also held a closed briefing for the European Union\u2019s diplomats in connection with the preparation of the 15th<\/sup> sanctions package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU started introducing sanctions against Belarus in 2020, two years before Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine, punishing the rigged presidential election and human rights abuse in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, sanctions against Minsk have been weaker than those against Moscow, reportedly allowing Belarus to become a way station for sanctioned goods to reach Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
