November 27, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> First Deputy Foreign Minister Siarhiej \u0141uka\u0161evi\u010d discussed dialogue and cultural cooperation with Israeli Charg\u00e9 d’Affaires Zvi Mirkin on the 150th birthday of Israel’s first president, Belarusian native Chaim Weizmann.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The parties confirmed their mutual interest in intensifying contacts to advance practical cooperation in various areas,” the Belarusian foreign ministry reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mirkin took over as head of the Israeli embassy in Minsk in July 2022 after Ambassador Alex Goldman-Shaiman, appointed in 2020, left his post due to family circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three Israeli presidents were born on the territory of modern Belarus: Chaim Weizmann, Zalman Shazar and Shimon Peres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, relations between Belarus and Israel have been quite tense lately because of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s anti-Semitic remarks, Minsk’s pro-Palestinian position in the Arab-Israeli conflict and its friendly relations with Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
