November 28, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Vietnam extradited a former Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Regiment fighter to Belarus in violation of the convention against torture, a prominent rights defender has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No State Party shall expel, return (‘refouler’) or extradite a person to another State where there are substantial grounds for believing that he would be in danger of being subjected to torture,” the convention says, whereas Vasil Vieramiej\u010dyk faces a high risk of being subjected to torture in Belarus, said Pavie\u0142 Sapie\u0142ka of the Viasna Human Rights Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights defenders declared Vieramiej\u010dyk a political prisoner having studied available information about the charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have taken into account the gravity and nature of this accusation, the authorities’ contradictory actions and statements, and the gross violation of his right not to be threatened with torture. The political nature of the charges is already obvious, as is the total disregard for the political prisoner’s procedural and civil rights,” Sapie\u0142ka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 27, Belarusian human rights organizations designated 18 people as political prisoners, including Vieramiej\u010dyk, whose deportation from Vietnam was reported by the Prakopje\u016d-Jahora\u016d Bloc on November 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vieramiej\u010dyk was arrested in Ho Chi Minh City on November 13. In Belarus, he may face up to 20 years in prison or even death, the bloc said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
